内容記述 In this paper the writer deals with the calcified tissue and its ultrastructures of the axial skeletons of Corallium. Materials used in this study were the mature and immature axial skeletons and soft parts of Corallium japonicum K. and C. konojoi K., The study has been made by following methods; (1) optical microscopy (ordinary and polarizing) for polished thin sectons, (2) transmitt electron microscopy for the replicas of sections beeing etched by EDTA-4Na etc., and for the ultrathin sections of the decalcified hard tissue, namely organic matrices, (3) optical microscopy for the stained sections of the immature branches to be decalcified by EDTA-4Na, (4) scanning electron microscopy for the surface of the axial skeletons. The hard tissue of the axial skeleton of Corallium is fundamentally composed of characteristic architectures, namely "dendritic structure," "interdendritic structure" and aggregation of sclerites in the axial part. The third one was formed in the early growth stage of axial skeleton. A dendritic structure, as in Fig. 1, forms a projection on the surface of the axial skeleton, viz. "dendritic protuberance." (P1. II-IV, Fig. 7-13) Through the central axis in the dendritic structure and dendritic protuberance, ramous organic matrix ("dendritic organic matrix") is recognized (as shown text figure 1, and Figs. 4, 5, 6, 14, 19 and 21), and each and all of neumerous mineral lamellae or blocks of high magnesian calcite to constitute the hard tissue of the axial skeleton is separately surrounded by thin membranous organic matrices. (Figs. 19, 20, 21 and 27) Within the limit of the author's observations, it is not recognizable for axis epitherium to envelop the axial skeleton of Corallium, but, as shown text figure 2, and Figs. 23, 24 and 26 in Plate VII, it may be possible that the groups of cells in contact with the surface of the axial skeletons built up thier hard tissue. This point is the subject for a future study.
