内容記述 | Toson Shimazaki regarded himself not only as a novelist but also as a scholar and a thinker, what can never be approved by the general conception of science and thought derived from modern ages of the West, which requires some theoretical systems based upon logical thinking. This fact means he was a successor of its Japanese conception, which intends as its last end the inquiry of life and the formation of personality instead of any theoretical system. After this recognition I researched the development of his thought. He inquired the "modern spirit" whose key subject is freedom based upon self-awaking, being inspired and led by his friend Tokoku Kitamura. He proceeded by his own internal necessity, though the stimulus of western thoughts must not be neglected, from Romanticism to' Naturalism, Impressionism and Symbolism, and in the end fell into Decadence. He experienced, as it were, almost every phase of the development of modern thoughts in the West in his short life. In this process I endeavoured especially to investigate his "conversion" from Romanticism to Naturalism. Though these two thoughts are apt to be thought as opposite, I elucidated them as stages of the development of the same modern spirit. The most interesting problem for me was his Decadence, because it reflects the wreck. of modern spirit itself, which is, I think, the cause of various diseases of our own present time and the gravest problem not yet solved for us too. Toson tried to rescue himself from this wreck by returning to the thought of "Kokugaku", his late father's belief, which insists on the most radical affirmation of life, life more fundermental than the modern extravagant life conditioned by freedom. But he failed in this trial, because he clinged still to the modern spirit, and the thought of Kokugaku and Modernism can not be consolidated so easily. | |||||
