内容記述 | Shelley'S tragedy The Cenci (1819) has received various comments from many scholars of Shelley. In spite of malicious critics like F. R. Leavis in the Revaluation (1936) most of the critics have agreed that the drama is one of Shelley's greatest works, though "Shelley's intent in regard to Beatrice is baffling." (Bostetter, The Romantic Ventriloquists, 1963, 326-7) For those critics, who try to find a Promethean heroism in the character of the heroine, never fail to be baffled by discovering her betraying Marzio, her hired assassin in the fifth act, and they are at last forced to conclude that she is no tragic character at all, on the ground that on the part of Beatrice there is no sign of self-consciousness, of a sense of guilty or repentance, such as even Lady Macbeth reveals. The aim of this paper is to investigate the cause of such a discontent, to clarify Shelley's real intent in regard to Beatrice in relation to his concept of tragedy. In so doing, first, I examined Shelley'S concept of tragedy, and, then, I studied the characters of Pope and Count Cenci as the heroine's civil and domestic tyrants and impostors and that of Orsino as a degraded churchman, most of whose motives were determined by his unrequited love for the heroine. And, lastly, I turned to the character of Beatrice and the manner by which she behaved herself against these conditions imposed upon her. I came to a conclusion that the difficulty of Shelley's treatment of the tragic subject might lie from the beginning in his essay to combine the contradicting elements in his morals and tragic ideas, that is, in the fact that in his morals hatred and vengeance was the worst of all evils or even a fountain from which the vast portion of all evils had gushed, yet that Shelley was compelled, by the necessity to make his heroine (whose sense of innocence and purity he never ceased to admire) "a tragic character ", to make her resort to the most debased act like hatred and vengeance as the means of expiring the civil and domestic evils. | |||||
