"御岳火山は乗鞍火山列の南部に位置する成層火山であり,その活動期から古期御岳火山と新期御岳火山に2分され,それぞれの活動期は中期更新世と後期更新世にあたる.中部更新統・樽沢累層は古期御岳火山の堆積物に相当し,下部層と上部層に区分できる.下部層は火山砕屑物を主体とし,多くの降下テフラ,薄い溶岩と火砕流堆積物が挟在する.上部層は溶岩を主体とし,ほとんど降下テフラは挟在しない.鍵層として木曽御岳山麓に広く追跡できる降下テフラのうち,里宮パミス,寒原パミスI・II・IIIは下部層に,白布沢パミスは上部層に挟在する.白布沢パミスを除くテフラ鍵層は重鉱物斑晶として角閃石を多く含むことで,白布沢パミスは黒雲母を含むことで特徴づけられる.古期御岳火山の活動を火山層序,テフラ層序,溶岩のK-Ar年代値に基づいて検討した結果,その活動をテフラステージ(0.78-0.64Ma)と溶岩ステージ(0.64-0.39Ma)に区分した.おおよそテフラステージの堆積物は樽沢累層下部層に,溶岩ステージの堆積物は上部層に相当する.テフラステージには主に降下テフラや火砕流を噴出する爆発的な活動が起き,それにともない土石流が発生し,主に山麓の東側を形成した.溶岩ステージには主に溶岩を噴出する活動が起き広く山麓を覆い,古期御岳火山を形成した.",
