From March to June 2022, we investigated the interference and home range overlap between two female common kestrels( IDs : “Northeast” and “Southeast”) of neighborhood pairs in a colony in northern Nagano Prefecture. Individual behavior of the kestrels around the nest was recorded using binoculars and a telescope. Each pair of kestrels was observed for two hours at three-day intervals. The survey time was gradually shifted from 5 : 00 in the morning to 19 : 00 in the evening. The home range sizes of two adult female kestrels were surveyed by radio-tracking. We recorded the locations obtained from the radio-tracking on a 1 : 3000 map. Sizes of the home range were estimated by the Minimum Convex Polygon, the 95% Kernel Method, and the 50% Kernel Method( for core areas). The total survey time of kestrel behavior was 40 hours for the female of the “Northeast” pair and 20 hours for the female of the “Southeast” pair. The “Northeast” female interfered only with the females of the “Northwest” pair, which accounted for 0.04% of the total observation time. The “Southeast” female interfered only with the “Southwest” paired females, accounting for 0.67 % for the total observation time. The estimated home range sizes of individual “Northeast” was 29.39 ha( the Minimum Convex Polygon), 17.06 ha( 95% Kernel), and 3.05 ha( 50% Kernel). The estimated home range sizes of individual “'Southeast'” was 13.41 ha (the Minimum Convex Polygon), 13.44 ha (95% Kernel), and 2.02 ha (50% Kernel). The Minimum Convex Polygon size for each breeding stage of the two individuals was the largest at the late nestling stage. During the courtship and nestling stages, when two individuals were observed and tracked at the same time, the home ranges estimated by the Minimum Convex Polygons of the two individuals did not overlap. We found that females in colonial-nesting of kestrels interfered less spatially and temporally, although their home ranges overlapped with neighborhood pairs during the entire breeding season. Our results suggest that female kestrels are partitioning their home ranges spatially and temporally and avoiding interactions with neighborhood nesting individuals to reduce their cost of inter-individual interferences in a colony.
