内容記述 | It is well known that warm intermediate waters had existed in the Sea of Japan during the Late Pliocene. However, sea bottom environments during the Late Pliocene have not been revealed. In this study, microfossils of planktonic foraminifers, benthic foraminifers, and ostracods were used to examine the bottom sedimentary environments in the Higashiyama area, Niigata Prefecture, central Japan. Samples for fossils ostracod, planktonic foraminifer, and benthic foraminifer analysis were collected from the Kawaguchi Formation, that crops out along Wadagawa and Nobegawa rivers. Wadagawa River locates in the eastern part of the studied area while the Nobegawa River is in the western part. Three specimens of fossil ostracods were found from two samples. Of the seven samples containing fossil planktonic foraminifer, two contained Globorotalia inflata. Furthermore, at least thirty genera of benthic foraminifers were identified from seven samples. G. inflata was identified from the sample at least 5 m above the horizon of G. inflata occurrence previously reported in Wadagawa River and 14.7 m below the NA33 tuff layers in Nobegawa River. Dominant species of benthic foraminifers indicates that the depositional environment of the eastern part was estimated to be a continental shelf environment, while that of the western part was deeper than that in the east part. Co-occurrence of G. inflata and cold-water ostracod taxa suggest that cold waters had existed just below the surface warm-water during the Late Pliocene. | |||||
