We reported about the housing modification for two patients with quadriplegia for the purpose of lessening the burden of caregiver and extending the mobility range of the quadriplegics. The improved points in the house that they are living after discharging from Shinshu University Hospital are followings ; 1. Trying to make the bathroom adjoin the living-room of the quadriplegics reduced the burden of caregivers in the taking a bath. 2. The floor of their living-room were changed into lumber from "tatami". This improvement made it easy to use wheel chairs (W/C) and mobile hoists. 3. Special equipments as the electric adjustable bed, electric W/C, mobile hoist and environmental control system (ECS) ｗere introduced for advancement in ADL of patients. The first case took high cost for the housing modification, but the second case redused the cost by effective improvement of his house showing the same good results as the first case. The results in improvement of ADL for quadriplegics were successful to some extent, but their low activity in daily life have still remained. For the advancement of their QOL, without confining to housing modification, the communities must understanding and support the disabled people, moreover, promote rearrangement of surroundings in which they are willing to participate in. |
