Both interpretations seem to have the same premise that other interpretations, if any, might be possible, they would surely be reduced to one of these interpretations. My thesis is, so to speak, the third interpretation of this ambiguous romance. The most important personality in this romance is undoubtedly Reuben Bourne himself, whose timid cowardice is well expressed in his conversation with other three characters, But the cream of his conversation with others is not so much in the contents of that conversation but in his suppressed attitudes when he converses with others. I having paid my attention only to Reuben\u0027s direct narrative style, Reuben\u0027s timid character discloses itself. Whenever it is not convenient to Reuben, he tends toward silence. This tendency of Reuben\u0027s timidity makes his seemingly sincere redemption almost worthless.
