"開発途上国の中でも，特に後発開発途上国とされる地域では，急増する人口の多くが農村に居住し農業を営んでおり，食料供給および収入源として農業が重要な役割を担っている。しかしながら，農業の生産性は低く収入も不安定であり，貧困問題も農村に集中する傾向にある。開発途上国の農村課題に関する研究において，課題分析による実証や提言を行うだけでは実社会での解決を導くことは難しい。地域で課題を抱える人々とともにその解決に向けた実践を繰り返し，実社会における課題解決を導く実践的研究の重要性が高まっている。本総説では，経済発展が進む東南アジアの中で，後発開発途上国として位置づけられるカンボジアにおいて，農村で営まれる農産物加工業の課題に焦点を当て，アクションリサーチの手法を取り入れた実践的研究を紹介する。一連の研究では，カンボジアの農産物加工業において薄利で赤字農家が多い米蒸留酒造に焦点を当て，経営調査の実施により課題の要因と解決戦略が検証された後，その戦略の実践として酒造試験と技術研修が実施され，生産性改善と品質向上による付加価値化を導くことで収入向上がもたらされた。実践を繰り返して見出された課題解決方法は，そのプロセスの中で研究対象地域の課題を解決すると共に，それらの知見はカンボジアの他の酒造地域における課題に対しても適応できる可能性が高いと考えられた。",
