However, the immunological effects of ET-1 in myocarditis have not been reported.To investigate the roles of ET-1 expression in myocarditis, immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain eaction (RT-PCR)were used to detect ET-1 in rat hearts with experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM). The EAM rat hearts were harvested at days 7,14,21 and 28 (n=12).For the control study,hearts from rats without immunization were also harvested at day 28 (n=5). Immunohistochemically, ET-1 was faintly expressed in unimmunized hearts.In EAM hearts,ET-1 expression was enhanced in the endothelial cells of small vasculatures in the myocardium at days 7 and 14.ET-1 was observed prior to interstitial cell infiltration and myocardial damage. However, ET-1 expression was decreased in the myocardium at days 21 and 28.
